2009 Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition (2-CD Afternoon set & 1-CD Evening set)

The Music committee of the CGMFA has reviewed the material from the 2009 CGM Competition recorded by Tunetime Music Inc and has decided to release both the afternoon and evening performances of the competitors as separate CD packages.

Disc 1 & 2: The AFTERNOON performances of all contestants, in the traditional competition style of Waltz, Jig, Reel, and Tune-of-Choice, are being released as a 2 CD set.

Disc 3: The EVENING performances of the 11 finalists are also offered as a single CD. The committee believes that the new rules for the finals (5 minutes of tunes of contrasting styles) have given finalists a venue in which to demonstrate their incredible fiddling talent, and that this unique concert should be preserved in its entirety on this CD.

Disc 1 & 2: For the 2 CD set, $20 for non-members or $15 for CGMFA members.

"Friday Night Live at the Barons Hotel” (2-CD set)

The CGM has just released a 2-CD set entitled “Friday Night Live at the Barons Hotel” recorded live on August 22, 2008.

We asked the competitors to come armed with dance music and styles from their part of the country, and to perform either singly or as a group by Province. The result is a 2-CD set of some of Canada’s best fiddling dance music performed by some of Canada’s best fiddlers from BC to the Maritimes. All tunes are listed, and individual tunes or sets can be accessed. The contestants really pulled out the stops on this one! The closing jam with all fiddlers on stage will knock your socks off!

2008 Contest Highlights

The new 2008 Canadian Grand Masters CD is now available for purchase. Superb on-stage sound engineering by CGMFA technical support as well as refined recording, mixing and mastering by TuneTime Music has made this CD the best ever. As in the past few years the format offers the complete evening perfomances of the three top finalists (Andre Brunet, Mathew Johnson, Kyle Charron), the complete performances of the Junior Showcase, as well as medleys of waltzes, jigs and reels selected from the competitors’ afternoon and evening sets by the CGMFA music committee. For those fiddlers wishing to locate a specific tune within any set, this years’ CD offers the listener the option to jump to, or repeat the particular tune, since each one has been assigned an individual track, however without pauses within a set. Standard pause times have been maintained between sets as in previous years recordings.

A CD of competition performances by the top three finalists of the 2007 Competition: Louis Schryer, Mathew Johnson, and Chuck Joyce plus live performances by the four Junior Showcase performers: Aimee Fauteux, Sierra Noble, Sam Romijn and Arthur Ross and various tunes selected by the CGMFA Music Committee included as medleys of waltzes, jigs and reels. Fiddlers are: André Brunet, Yvon Cuillerier, Greg Henry, Pamela Yakabuskie, Jacques Mainville, Rebecca Smith, Tyler Beckett, Trent Freeman, Karrnnel Sawitsky, Anthony Rissesco and Sydney Wilson.

The 2006 Friday Night Dance CD

As part of the 2006 contest weekend the competitors were asked to provide music from their corner of Canada for the Friday night dance. The "Live Off The Floor" recording is a selection of 32 dance sets played by 21 of Canada's best fiddlers. The varied pan-Canadian fiddle styles are a treat to listen or dance to.
