Junior Showcase

In 1993, under the leadership of past board member Bruce Murray, the CGMFA Board of Directors began the Junior Showcase as part of the Saturday Night Finals program. Since 1993, up to four Junior Showcase participants throughout Canada are selected annually by the CGMFA Board of Directors to perform. While this is for some people a one time performance opportunity on a national stage, facts and history point to this showcase as a springboard for future fiddling success. A number of these fiddlers have gone on to promising and established performance and teaching careers, including a portion of those who have not competed at the annual competition.

Of the 114 Junior Showcase participants who have participated, the breakdown of contest participation is as follows:

  • 53 of the 114 Junior Showcase fiddlers have since competed in the CGM competition.

  • Of these 53 fiddlers, 30 have made the CGM Finals.

  • Of the 30 finalists, 12 have made the top three.

  • Of these 12 fiddlers, 7 have become Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Champions.

Selection Criteria

Approved by the CGMFA Board (Dec. 2022) and faciliated by the Junior Showcase Selection Committee (sub-committee of the CGMFA Board).

  • A maximum of four Junior Showcase performances shall be selected for a maximum ten minute performance spot each during the Saturday Night Finals at the annual competition. These participants may also be asked to give additional performances as determined by the CGMFA Board of Directors and/or its local host committee in a particular year. (Seniors’ homes, media appearances, Friday Night Dance, for example)

  • Applicants for the Junior Showcase will show proof of Canadian Citizenship/minimum two year residency and be age 15 years or younger.

  • Applicants may apply via the official CGMFA website and/or be selected directly by the CGMFA’s Junior Showcase committee.

  • Preference will be given to people who display a strong level of accomplishment.

  • Prepared audition videos for the Junior Showcase (three tunes) will be submitted/uploaded (along with personal information) to the Junior Showcase committee via email.

  • Deadline for submissions shall be no later than April 1st of the current competition year.

  • Videos for the Junior Showcase auditions are to be screened by the Junior Showcase committee for presentation and approval by the CGMFA Board of Directors. Final showcase selections shall remain at the CGMFA Board’s discretion. Unusual circumstances will always be given due care and consideration.

  • Showcase performances are not remunerated by the CGMFA, but a small gift of appreciation may be offered.
